Stepped Soil Moisture Probe

The Katons multi-layer soil moisture probe is a multi-level sensor that collects moisture and temperature data from different depths at the same time. It installs quickly with no infrastructure and works fully with the Electronic Water Management System (ESYS).

Used in many settings from field crops to greenhouses, this innovative sensor optimises water use while increasing crop yield. Its long life and resistance to harsh conditions make it a reliable solution for modern agriculture.

This multi-layer soil moisture and temperature probe measures at different depths with a single probe and supports wireless communication. Known for its rugged design, it comes in six probe lengths that measure down to 120 cm.

The probe is based on GroPoint's patented TDT5 technology. Each segment measures soil moisture along its entire length, so every measuring point captures a much larger volume of soil. High-frequency pulses sent for each measurement deliver precise, consistent moisture data.

The sensor works fully with the Electronic Water Management System (ESYS). Through ESYS, field conditions can be monitored in real time on web and mobile devices. Thanks to the wireless network, an expandable sensor network can collect data at many points without long cables across the field. All sensors integrate easily, and the data can be viewed on the ESYS platform through a user-friendly interface.

The Katons stepped soil moisture and temperature probe can be monitored and controlled in real time through the ESYS (Electronic Water Management System) platform.

From a smartphone, tablet or computer you can:

  • see moisture and temperature data from different soil depths at a glance,
  • evaluate it together with weather data such as live rainfall, wind speed and direction,
  • and automate irrigation by linking it with your irrigation valves.

Katons stepped soil moisture and temperature probes installed in the field collect data from many locations, and the data is visualised segment by segment in the ESYS interface in real time.

The multi-layer readings from each probe are listed on screen, and soil moisture at each depth can be tracked separately. This lets farmers and managers see:

at a glance. Together with ESYS, Katons makes micro-management possible on large farms, raising efficiency while keeping water loss to a minimum.

A scientific-grade, cost-effective soil moisture probe that measures volumetric water content and soil temperature at multiple depths with a single probe. Suited to precision agriculture, it gives full control over irrigation, improves water-use efficiency and helps you understand water movement in the soil.

Unlike other multi-depth soil moisture probes, it measures soil moisture continuously along the whole probe by averaging the volumetric water content of each segment (15 cm or 6 in). This unique feature gives a continuous measurement of water movement through the soil rather than at specific points that leave "dead spots" in the soil profile.

Its slim, light design installs quickly with minimal soil disturbance using a pilot rod and slide hammer tool. Our probe design removes the laborious digging needed to install other profile probes. It is designed for vertical installation to take continuous soil moisture and temperature readings across several soil layers.

  • how much irrigation each area needs,
  • which layer has started to dry out,
  • and which areas need timely, accurate irrigation

The most accurate and cost-effective soil moisture profiling solution available

  • Ideal for research, vineyards, vegetable crops, orchards and many other agricultural applications.
  • Removes the need for multiple soil moisture sensors and cabling.
  • Measures along the full length of the probe, averaging volumetric water content and soil temperature in each segment.
  • Installs quickly and easily without digging.
  • A single SDI-12 address reads all segments, which simplifies installation. Optional MODBUS/RS-485 output.
  • Soil moisture readings can be user-calibrated with 3rd-order polynomials for specific requirements.
  • Low power requirements — suited to remote, autonomous applications.
  • Patented TDT5 technology for scientific-grade accuracy and excellent long-term measurement stability.
  • Fully potted electronics for excellent durability.

Configurations

Available in six multi-segment lengths, suited to monitoring a wide range of crops.

Depending on your needs, you can choose between two soil temperature sensor configurations. If you only need soil moisture, you can order it without temperature sensors; the standard configuration places a temperature sensor about every 10 cm.

Choose the number of 15 cm (6″) segments for your application. Custom lengths are also available.

Sensor specifications

The multi-layer soil moisture probe is designed to work within a fully integrated monitoring and control system together with the Mavruk® industrial panel PC, the Sugi® all-in-one water monitoring station and the Yudu® Master industrial PC. The system processes multi-layer moisture and temperature data from the field in real time and presents it to the user, maximising efficiency in irrigation and water management. With its rugged design, high-precision measurement and advanced platform, it offers a strong, sustainable solution for modern agriculture.

For quick, easy installation, we recommend the optional pilot rod and slide hammer.

Makes installation easy without digging. Fitted to the pilot rod, it opens a hole in the ground.

Fitted to the slide hammer, it opens a hole exactly the size of the probe.

Standard 5 m cable. Weight: 38 g/m | 0.026 lb/ft

  • Six probe length options: 30 cm, 45 cm, 60 cm, 75 cm, 90 cm and 120 cm
